Getting Ready for College

By Lily Manago

Do you want to know more about colleges and applying to them? Are you interested in what you can do to help have a stronger application for college? Applying to colleges is a broad subject and after reading this article, I hope that you will understand it a little bit more.

Most middle school students, like sixth grader Jennifer Crisafulli, want to know more about applying to colleges. It's a process that will begin for middle schoolers as soon as next year.

Alison Gilroy, a guidance counselor at Natick High School, says that filling out a college application is a long and continuous process with many different moving parts, but the most important part is the application itself. Your application determines whether you are admitted into your selected colleges.

Another thing middle schoolers are most interested in is getting scholarships. Jen Crisafulli said, ”I want to know more about getting a scholarship because I know it would really benefit my parents.”

According to Alison Gilroy, the more scholarships you apply to, the more likely you are to receive one. She also says that full scholarships are extremely rare and to get one you have to stand out academically or in sports.

The last thing that most middle schoolers like sixth grader Anna Sorber are interested in, is what makes a good application and how do middle schoolers prepare to file a college application.

Gilroy says, ”Schools look for well-rounded students who not only achieve good grades, but are also active and involved. The best thing that a middle school student can do to prepare for the college process is focus on creating a solid work ethic and achieving positive grades. Students at the middle school level will have plenty of time to focus on being an excellent student before having to actively work on the college process.”

I hope after reading this article that you have learned more about the college application process and and what you can do as a middle schooler to prepare.
